VantageScore vs. FICO: why your numbers disagree

Credit basics5 min read

Your free app says 742. The lender says 718. Nobody is lying: two different models read slightly different data through different formulas on different schedules. The gap confuses everyone exactly once — this page ensures once is enough. Which number decides, which number guides, and what to do about each.

VantageScore versus FICO — two rulers measuring different things.

The mortgage wrinkle: home lenders overwhelmingly use FICO.

So read both numbers wisely — right number for the right use.

Scales differ, so never compare raw scores across models.

Watch the lender's number. Their ruler rules, always.

Our score-models guide reads both. Free, link below.

Scores are instruments, not grades. Learn which dial the decision-maker reads, and tune for that one.

The mortgage wrinkle

Mortgage underwriting's older FICO versions punish items newer models forgive — paid collections count, authorized-user effects differ. If homeownership is the goal, optimize for the older model's sensibilities: clean collections, genuine history, low utilization. Your loan officer names the version; this journal names the moves. Educational only; no outcome promised.

Step by step

Reading both numbers wisely

  1. Step 1

    Track trends, not digits

Same source, same cadence, direction over months. Rising lines beat exact numbers.

  2. Step 2

    Learn your lender's version

Ask directly: which bureau, which model, which version. Then optimize for that one.

  3. Step 3

    Fix what both agree on

Lates, utilization, errors — every model punishes these. Shared weaknesses first.

  4. Step 4

    Ignore model-specific noise

Paid-collection handling differs by version. Don't chase quirks; fix fundamentals.

Questions

What people ask next

Why do my two scores differ?

Different formulas, different bureau data, different scales and update cycles. Gaps of 20–40 points are ordinary — not errors.

Which one do lenders use?

Mostly FICO variants — mortgage, auto, and card underwriting overwhelmingly run FICO, often bureau- and version-specific.

Is VantageScore useless?

No — free VantageScore tracking shows trends, utilization effects, and new items fast. Direction matters more than digits; use it as a dashboard, not a verdict.

Which FICO version matters?

Mortgage lenders commonly use older FICO versions that ignore neither paid collections nor authorized-user subtleties the way newer ones do. Ask your loan officer which version they pull.
