Hard vs. soft inquiries: what actually dings you
“Don't let them pull your credit” is among the most expensive folk advice in finance — it stops people from shopping for better rates over a cost of a few temporary points. Inquiries are the smallest scoring factor, rate shopping deduplicates, and soft pulls are literally invisible. Learn the actual prices below, then shop like someone who knows them.

Hard versus soft inquiries — which pulls actually touch your score?
The exception first: thin files with many pulls feel it more. Everyone else, relax a little.
Shop for credit without fear — rate shopping in one window counts as one.
Hard pulls fade within about a year. Small, brief, then gone.
Pulls aren't the game anyway. Payments win; inquiries barely register.
Our inquiries guide sorts every pull. Free, link below.
A few points for a better rate is the cheapest trade in lending. Fear of pulls has cost more money than pulls ever have.
The exception: thin files, many pulls
Scattered applications across months on a young file signal desperation to models — batch, then silence. Six inquiries in six months reads very differently from six in six days. Concentrate shopping, then let the file rest. Educational only; no outcome promised.
Step by step
Shopping for credit without fear
Step 1
Batch applications
Compare lenders inside a tight window so inquiries deduplicate into one scoring event.
Step 2
Prequalify first
Soft-pull prequalification narrows the field before any hard inquiry exists.
Step 3
Apply in strength order
Best-fit lender first while the file is cleanest. Each application slightly weakens the next.
Step 4
Then go quiet
No new applications for months after approval. Let inquiries age off in peace.
Questions
What people ask next
What creates a hard inquiry?
Applications for new credit — cards, loans, mortgages, apartment approvals sometimes. You authorize it (often in fine print) and it reports to bureaus.
How much does one hard pull cost?
Typically a handful of points, fading within months and gone from scoring after about a year. One inquiry never defines a file.
What is rate shopping?
Multiple mortgage, auto, or student-loan inquiries within a short window (commonly ~14–45 days depending on model) generally count as one — shop confidently inside the window.
Do soft pulls matter at all?
For scoring, no: personal checks, preapprovals, employer and account reviews are invisible to scores. Check freely.
