How to write a CFPB complaint that moves

Your rights5 min read

Most complaint portals feel like shouting into a canyon. This one is different: companies answer the vast majority of CFPB complaints, usually within about two weeks, because a regulator is watching the thread. Your complaint also joins a dataset that drives real enforcement. The catch? Vague complaints get vague answers. Here is how to write one that moves.

Want a company to actually respond? Regulators forward clear complaints fast.

The anatomy is simple: what happened, when, what proof you hold, and what would fix it.

File it tight — facts, dates, documents attached. That package gets answered.

Because companies have to respond to regulator-forwarded complaints. The clock runs on them, not you.

Keep it calm throughout. Paper beats anger, every single time.

Our complaint guide includes the structure. Free, link below.

You are not just asking for your fix. You are adding one more data point to the pattern that eventually stops the practice.

The anatomy of a moving complaint

Open with the account and the one-sentence problem. Then a dated timeline — what happened, what you sent, what they said. Then the specific resolution you want. Attach the two or three documents that prove the core of it. Close with contact details that work. Five paragraphs, zero adjectives about your feelings, every date exact. That complaint gets answered. Educational only; no outcome promised.

Step by step

Filing a complaint that moves

  1. Step 1

    Gather the paper

Account numbers, dates, names, and copies of the key documents. A complaint with attachments outruns one without.

  2. Step 2

    Write the timeline

What happened, in order, with dates. Three short paragraphs beat three pages of frustration.

  3. Step 3

    Name the resolution

“Correct the balance to $0” beats “do something.” Companies respond fastest to specific, reasonable asks.

  4. Step 4

    File and track

Submit at the CFPB portal (and your state AG where fitting), save the tracking numbers, calendar the response window.

Questions

What people ask next

What does the CFPB actually do with complaints?

It forwards your complaint to the company, which generally must respond within about 15 days, and tracks patterns across thousands of complaints to guide supervision and enforcement.

Which issues qualify?

Credit reporting, debt collection, mortgages, cards, student and auto loans, checking accounts, money transfers, and more. If a financial company is involved, it likely qualifies.

Should I complain before disputing directly?

Do both tracks: dispute with the bureau or company directly and file the regulator complaint in parallel. They reinforce each other and create independent paper trails.

Is there a state-level equivalent?

Yes — state attorneys general and financial regulators take complaints too, and some move faster on local companies. File federal and state together when both fit.
